20 Years of Lifelong Learning at SaddleBrooke
ILR Celebrates a Milestone at SaddleBrooke
For residents of SaddleBrooke and The Preserve at SaddleBrooke, lifelong learning doesn’t stop at retirement—it flourishes. This year, the Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR) is celebrating an inspiring milestone: 20 years of bringing high-quality, engaging educational opportunities to the community.
From Humble Beginnings to a Thriving Program
Founded in 2005, the ILR began with just 12 courses. Fast forward two decades, and it now offers around 30 enriching courses each year taught by over 50 passionate instructors. The topics are as diverse as the interests of SaddleBrooke residents themselves—ranging from history, art, and political science to astronomy, geology, mythology, and even magic.
Furthermore, with over 1,850 subscribers, ILR has become a cornerstone of the SaddleBrooke lifestyle—where curiosity, learning, and connection thrive at any age.
A Celebration of Dedication
The ILR marked its 20th year with a special reception to thank the incredible instructors who make the program possible. A standout moment of the celebration was honoring three individuals who have been with ILR since its founding in 2005:
- Louise Grabell, who taught the program’s first bioethics course
- Ken Lund, who introduced astronomy to early students
- Riley Jackson, a founding board member whose vision helped shape the program
Guests enjoyed food, drinks, and entertainment by Magic Ken (aka Ken Marich), who added a little extra sparkle to the evening.
Learn for the Joy of It
Consequently, ILR courses are held twice a year—each fall and winter/spring—and typically run three to six weeks. Classes meet weekly for two hours and welcome between 20 to 50 students, depending on the topic.
Also, there are no tests, no grades, and no homework. Instead, you’ll participate in engaging discussions and the joy of learning alongside fellow residents. It’s an ideal way to explore a new subject, dive deeper into a passion, or simply meet others with shared interests.
Share What You Know
The ILR is always on the lookout for new instructors. If you have a background, hobby, or life experience you’re passionate about, consider teaching a class. In addition, you don’t need teaching experience—just a desire to share your knowledge.

A Lasting Legacy
As the ILR celebrates two decades of quality education, it continues to foster a community where learning is always in season. Whether you want to expand your mind or inspire others, the lifelong learning at SaddleBrooke offers a meaningful way to stay connected and engaged. Here’s to the next 20 years of learning, sharing, and growing—together.
