Celebrating 29 Years of PebbleCreek Senior Softball

In the 55+ community of PebbleCreek, active living and camaraderie take center stage through softball. Recently, the PebbleCreek Senior Softball Association (PCSSA) kicked off its impressive 29th season. Celebrating 29 Years of PebbleCreek Senior Softball, the association boasts 24 teams divided across three competitive divisions – American, Mid-American, and National. This milestone season registered 304 devoted members, comprised of 256 players, 13 subs, 25 nonplaying managers and assistants, and 10 dedicated volunteers. This season, it also warmly welcomed a group of new players – the rookies.

PCSSA's Inception

To fully appreciate the growth and success of the PCSSA, let's rewind to its inception in September 1995. A group of softball enthusiasts gathered at the Eagle's Nest clubhouse at PebbleCreek to discuss their passion for softball. Jim Snyder took charge in forming a softball league of interested residents. The initial spark led to the formation of two teams, consisting of 21 players, with games played at the Old Litchfield Park field. The league was born, and from these humble beginnings, the journey began.

Evolution of the Field

The PCSSA timeline unfolds with significant milestones:

–November 1997: Games moved to the "Rock Pile" in PebbleCreek, named for its rocky terrain. Two teams also participated in Glendale in different age divisions.

–1998: The league expanded to include six teams from PebbleCreek, Sun City Grand, Rosie's Restaurant, Happy Trails, El Mirage, and Arizona Traditions.

–January 2000: The Field of Dreams became a reality, accommodating seven teams, with the league gradually growing to exclusively include PebbleCreek residents by 2003.

–2004: Marking a surge in popularity, the league expanded to 12 teams with 16 players each.

–2016/2017 to 2022/2023: A consistent growth saw an increase in teams, players, and even a split into divisions in the 2020/2021 season.

–2023/2024: A momentous season as the league expands to 24 teams, introducing a third division.

A Legacy of Players

The PCSSA is more than just a softball league; it's a community bound by a shared love for the game. Remarkably, one of the original 21 players, Bobby “Q,” continues to play. Moreover, 25 players have achieved 20 years of play and/or remain active. Another 30 players have marked 15 years in the league. The history of PCSSA is not just about games played but a testament to enduring camaraderie and passion.

A Remarkable Journey

Celebrating 29 Years of PebbleCreek Senior Softball, we reflect on a remarkable journey. From Old the Litchfield Parkfield to the current Field of Dreams, the league's growth, stands as a testament to the enduring love for the game.

In the words of Jim Bouton, “You spend a good piece of your life gripping a baseball, and in the end, it turns out that it was the other way around all the time.”

Cheers to the PCSSA and many more years of softball excellence!
