From Quail Creek to the gala, Donna Yuritic’s day began before sunrise and ended with an unexpected encounter with tennis royalty at a prestigious event in New York City.
As the teaching professional at the Quail Creek Tennis Club and a retired pro tennis player, Yuritic was traveling to New York City to attend the Harlem Junior Tennis & Education Program (HJTEP) annual Spring Gala alongside her longtime doubles partner, Dr. Kim Williams. What followed was an inspiring celebration of tennis, mentorship, and community impact.
A Star-Studded Evening in Midtown Manhattan
Held at the Ziegfeld Ballroom in the heart of Manhattan, the black-tie gala welcomed guests with elegant purple and green lighting and a unique centerpiece—a full-size tennis court where HJTEP student-athletes showcased their talents. The evening’s theme was clear: tennis can open doors, shape lives, and transform communities.
As Yuritic and Williams found their seats at Table One, they were stunned to discover they’d be dining with none other than tennis icon Billie Jean King.
Hosted by Patrick McEnroe, the event featured appearances by celebrity guests including Al Roker, Deborah Roberts, Chris Evert, and Katrina Adams. King presented the Shining Star Award to Evert, celebrating her legendary career and dedication to the next generation of tennis players.
A Cause Close to the Heart
The Harlem Junior Tennis & Education Program supports nearly 800 student-athletes, most of whom are students of color ages 5 to 18. With a focus on developing the whole child through academics, athletics, and life skills. HJTEP emphasizes self-esteem, sportsmanship, and personal achievement.
For Yuritic and Williams, this mission resonates deeply. Both have devoted years to mentoring young athletes, including their former protégé Katrina Adams. In fact, Dr. Williams first placed a tennis racket in Adams’ hand, while Yuritic coached her at age nine. Adams would go on to make history as the youngest U.S. Tennis Association President, and she now leads HJTEP as its Executive Director and President.
Her journey reflects a powerful message Adams’ father often shared with Yuritic: “We are all spokes in a wheel.” Our actions create ripples that can shape the future in ways we may never fully realize.
