On the Road with SaddleBrooke Ranch’s National Parks Club

Canyon de Chelly National Monument (NM) makes for an interesting weekend exploration excursion for members of the SaddleBrooke Ranch’s National Parks Club, who are passionate about exploring and sharing experiences in our nation’s most treasured outdoor spaces

A Land Steeped in History

Located in the northeast corner of Arizona, Canyon de Chelly NM boasts a unique distinction: it’s one of the longest continuously inhabited areas in North America. This land holds deep spiritual significance for the Dine (Navajo) people, who call it Tsegi (pronounced “SAY-ih”). Today, roughly 40 families call this place home. The Navajo Nation and the National Park Service work together to manage this treasured monument.

Unveiling the Past

Evidence of human presence in Canyon de Chelly NM stretches back nearly 5,000 years. Archaic hunters and gatherers, Basketmakers, and Ancestral Puebloans all left their mark. Look closely and you’ll see campsites, petroglyphs, and pictographs etched on the canyon walls – a testament to these past civilizations. About 700 years ago most people moved away, but a few remained in the canyons with some tribes spending summers hunting and farming. Then, around 1700, the Navajo arrived, weaving their own rich culture and traditions into the fabric of this landscape.
