A Resident’s New Chapter in Creativity at PebbleCreek

At PebbleCreek, a 55+ active adult community in Goodyear, Arizona, retirement opens the door to new interests, unexpected talents, and meaningful connections. Resident Betty Jean Kennedy’s artistic journey at PebbleCreek shows how a passion for painting can become a rewarding part of retirement. From creating beautiful artwork to inspiring fellow artists, Betty Jean has found countless ways to share her creativity. Her story reflects the opportunities residents have to pursue their passions and make the most of every chapter.

A Creative Journey Takes Shape

Betty Jean’s interest in art began long before she called PebbleCreek home. After retiring, she and her husband, David, spent winters along the Texas Gulf Coast. There, she joined a small group of watercolor painters who gathered weekly to share their interests. Although she enjoyed painting, it remained an occasional pastime. That changed in 2011 when Betty Jean and David moved to PebbleCreek to be closer to their daughter’s family. She joined the PebbleCreek Art Club and began exploring new artistic possibilities.

With access to fellow artists, workshops, and creative encouragement, her interest in painting grew into a lasting passion. She expanded beyond watercolors, developing her skills in acrylics and pastels. What began as a casual interest became an important part of her life at PebbleCreek.

Finding Beauty in the Details

For Betty Jean, artistic inspiration can come from almost anywhere. Flowers, fruits, vegetables, weathered wood, and reflections all offer opportunities to explore color, texture, and detail. Her acrylic paintings often feature dramatic black backgrounds that showcase her meticulous technique. Her pastel paintings bring a different dimension to her creativity. Works such as Life is a Bowl of Cherries and Radishes celebrate the rich colors and intricate details of everyday objects.

Among her favorite works is Memories, featuring a rusty Radio Flyer wagon alongside wooden blocks. Another favorite, Let’s See What You’re Made Of, captures a whimsical metal vulture sculpture from Vulture City, Arizona.

Over the years, Betty Jean has continued refining her techniques through practice, experimentation, and feedback from fellow artists. And while creating art brings her personal fulfillment, sharing that passion has become equally rewarding.

Inspiring Creativity and Connection

Betty Jean’s contributions to the PebbleCreek Art Club extend far beyond her paintings. A former club president and 2014 Artist of the Year, she has helped create opportunities for others to explore art. She established the popular 30-30 Sketching Group, which keeps members creatively engaged throughout the summer. She also helped develop sketching workshops and the Copying the Masters series.

Additionally, Betty Jean has supported Open Studio sessions, organized supplies, and helped maintain ongoing opportunities for artistic feedback. Her dedication reflects something special about the PebbleCreek community. Residents don’t just participate in activities. They share their knowledge, encourage one another, and help create experiences everyone can enjoy. For Betty Jean, volunteering and staying involved have added another meaningful dimension to her retirement.

Discovering What’s Possible at PebbleCreek

One of Betty Jean’s greatest joys is encouraging others to explore their own creative potential. She knows firsthand how practice, patience, and encouragement can transform a casual interest into something extraordinary. Her hope is that more residents will join the Art Club, attend Open Studio, and experience that same sense of discovery.

And that’s part of what makes the lifestyle at PebbleCreek so appealing. Whether exploring a new hobby, returning to a longtime passion, or sharing talents with others, opportunities are all around. With an exciting variety of clubs, activities, and resort-style amenities, PebbleCreek offers an active adult lifestyle filled with possibilities.

Betty Jean’s journey is a reminder that some of life’s most rewarding discoveries may still be waiting. At PebbleCreek, there’s always room to explore something new, connect with others, and create a life that’s uniquely yours.
