SaddleBrooke Cyclemasters Conquer Black Hills Trail

At The Preserve at SaddleBrooke and SaddleBrooke, residents embrace an active, adventurous lifestyle. Ten members of the SaddleBrooke Cyclemasters recently took that spirit on the road, tackling the George S. Mickelson Trail in the Black Hills of South Dakota. This 109-mile rails-to-trails Hall of Fame route is celebrated as one of the most scenic cycling trails in the country.

A Trail Steeped in History

Before hitting the trail, it’s worth understanding its unique background. Originally built by the Burlington Route Railroad in the late 19th century, the trail connected gold and silver mines in Lead and Deadwood to the main railroad line across Nebraska. After that, the Burlington Northern Railroad discontinued use of the section between Deadwood and Edgemont, South Dakota Governor George Mickelson championed the conversion of the route into a recreational trail, now beloved by cyclists nationwide. Today, that vision provides cyclists and hikers with a scenic and historic path unlike any other.

The Ride

Once on the trail, the SaddleBrooke Cyclemasters discovered exactly why it’s so highly regarded. Using the town of Custer as their base, the SaddleBrooke Cyclemasters completed the trail over three days with the help of a shuttle service, allowing them to ride in one direction. The crushed gravel path, featuring numerous bridges and four tunnels, was firmer and more well-maintained than expected, thus offering a smooth and enjoyable ride.

The group’s journey included:

  • A 44.5-mile ride from Custer to Edgemont

  • A 30.2-mile ride from Mystic to Custer

  • A 34-mile ride from Deadwood to Mystic

By the end of their rides, the group agreed this adventure ranked among their most memorable cycling experiences.

Exploring the Black Hills

After completing the trail, many riders extended their trip to explore more of the Black Hills. Highlights included the Mount Rushmore light show, Crazy Horse Monument, Wind Cave National Park, and Custer State Park.
