SaddleBrooke Photography Club Captures the Beauty of Tucson’s Historic Barrios

Fourteen SaddleBrooke Photography Club members set out on a photo adventure to Tucson. Their goal was to capture the vibrant colors and rich history of Tucson’s Barrio Viejo and El Presidio Historic District. Led by field trip leader Bob Shea, the club embarked on their exploration on a delightful Sunday morning.

Exploring Tucson’s Historic Barrios

Tucson boasts a rich tapestry of historic neighborhoods known as “barrios” dating back to the mid-19th century.

  • Barrio Viejo (Old Neighborhood), also known as Barrio Historico, is a vibrant community brimming with artistic energy. Beloved for its charming and eclectic atmosphere, the area showcases a dazzling array of traditional Sonoran row houses built with adobe bricks. Renowned for its lively atmosphere reminiscent of Old Mexico, Barrio Viejo is a feast for the senses.

  • El Presidio Historic District, located near Presidio San Augustine, is steeped in history. This district is lined with homes that once belonged to Tucson’s most prominent families and influential figures.

A Top Destination for Culture and History

Barrio Viejo’s unique blend of culture and history has garnered recognition from prestigious publications like Condé Nast Traveler magazine. In 2024, the magazine named Barrio Viejo a “Top Place to Go in North America.” Also, the article highlights the neighborhood’s “historic melting pot galvanized by delicious dining and cultural programming,” making it a must-visit for anyone seeking a captivating cultural experience.

Experts expect that the designation of Barrio Viejo as a National Historic Landmark in 2024 will further propel its growth. Moreover, this recognition is likely to attract even more restaurants, galleries, and art installations, solidifying Barrio Viejo’s position as a cultural and artistic hub.

Tucson’s Artistic Murals

Tucson’s streets are adorned with captivating large murals that serve as vibrant reminders of the city’s rich past. Furthermore, the sheer diversity of these murals, along with the distinct character of each barrio, creates a captivating experience for both photographers and casual visitors alike.
