Meet PebbleCreek’s Nonagenarian Muriel Hiller

PebbleCreek has officially welcomed a new member to the exclusive nonagenarian club! Muriel Hiller just hit the big 9-0. Let's just say she's proving that age is just a number and a reason to throw a party.  A host of family and friends gathered in the Chianti Room at the PebbleCreek clubhouse amidst a venue of hot pink and orange balloons, to cheer and applaud Muriel on the unforgettable celebratory occasion.

On this special day, PebbleCreek's nonagenarian Muriel Hiller was surrounded by her six sons, three daughters-in-law, and two grandchildren. Folks traveled from as far away as Chicago, Michigan, Ohio, and New Jersey to celebrate with her. In the mix was a friend of over 72 years from Morristown, NJ, where Muriel lived and grew up.

Muriel's Life Changes

Muriel retired after 30 years of employment with AT&T in 1989 and then relocated to Scottsdale with her husband, Filmore, affectionately known as Fil. They traveled the world together and enjoyed life in Scottsdale until Fil's passing in 2006. Following this, Muriel made another significant move in 2007, leaving Scottsdale to settle in PebbleCreek.

When she originally moved from New Jersey to Arizona, Muriel was feeling alone and far away from her best friends and family back home, so she set about to remedy the situation. Together with another woman, Muriel formed a group where women of color could gather for fun and fellowship. That club officially registered in the state of Arizona in 1992 as Sisters of the Valley (SOV). With nearly 300 members, SOV meets quarterly, and its various interest groups, such as book discussions, Bible study, lunch and dinner groups, theatrical and movie groups, traveling sisters, and bridge players, convene monthly for socializing.

Despite initial hesitation to leave her beloved Scottsdale home, Muriel found herself appreciating all that PebbleCreek had to offer. Quickly becoming involved in the community, she joined as a Kare Bear in Unit 58 and actively participated in the Democratic Club, serving as the acting secretary. Additionally, she became a member of the Executive Board of the Just Folks Association. One of the best parts of being in this community is her surrounding family who followed her to Arizona in later years. Her elder sister, Ethel (Connie) Montgomery, lives just a few doors away, and Muriel feels blessed to have four of her five Arizona nieces residing in the PebbleCreek community, with another niece in Surprise, Arizona.

Living the Active Lifestyle

Despite her age, Muriel continues to maintain an incredibly active life. Alongside her ongoing membership in the mentioned groups, she joined the PebbleCreek Diversity group two years ago. Furthermore, she serves as the Corresponding Secretary of The Union of Black Episcopalians (UBE) and remains an active participant in St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Litchfield Park, contributing to various ministries since 2007. When not busy with these groups or attending other social gatherings, Muriel enjoys solving word games or reading a good book.

Longevity thrives in Muriel’s family; her older sister in Georgia is 94! PebbleCreek's nonagenarian Muriel Hiller is proving that age is just a number, and hers happens to be fabulous!
